chevron_rightIn a significant boost to India’s semiconductor ambitions, Tata Semiconductor Manufacturing Pvt. Ltd. (TSML)—a subsidiary of Tata Electronics—has successfully secured funding of ₹168.35 billion (approximately $735 million) from a consortium of leading global banks to develop its upcoming semiconductor fabrication plant in Dholera, Gujarat.
The project, with a total estimated investment of ₹1.91 trillion, marks a strategic milestone in India’s journey toward building a robust domestic chip manufacturing ecosystem under the larger vision of self-reliance in high-tech industries.
As per regulatory filings, the financing agreement comes with structured conditions, including Tata Group retaining a minimum 51% majority stake and continued use of the Tata brand identity, reinforcing lender confidence in the group’s legacy and governance standards. The loan tenure extends until 2031, with defined financial discipline requiring a balanced equity-to-debt ratio.
The Gujarat government has allocated approximately 163.5 acres of land for the project in Dholera. Notably, while the land has been officially valued at zero due to its current undeveloped status, it has still been pledged as collateral—highlighting that lender trust is primarily anchored in Tata’s strong global credibility rather than asset valuation.
The funding has been facilitated through international banking units operating from GIFT City, Gandhinagar, enabling access to competitive interest rates. The participating financial institutions include HSBC, MUFG, First Abu Dhabi Bank, DBS, and ANZ, reflecting strong global institutional backing for the project.
Since its inception in November 2023, Tata Electronics has already infused approximately ₹36.9 billion into TSML. In collaboration with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation, the company is targeting trial production by mid-2027, with an initial production capacity of 50,000 chips per month.
While construction is progressing steadily, industry experts emphasize that the project’s long-term success will hinge on overcoming technical complexities during the trial phase—particularly in achieving the precision and purity standards essential for semiconductor manufacturing.
