The Forest, Environment & Climate Change ministry communicated its nod directly to the Dholera International Airport Company Ltd (DIACL) — a SPV set up for the airport by the state government.
This strategic nod follows earlier approvals, including the Ministry of Defence no-objection certificate in 2014 and the Civil Aviation Ministry’s site clearance, setting the airport on track for full development.
Project highlights:
Spread over 3,525 acres (~1,426 hectares), the airport will feature two runways and a terminal to handle 1,200 domestic and international passengers.
Estimated completion in three phases, with ₹716 crore earmarked for Phase I.
Aims to ease congestion at Ahmedabad’s saturated airport, which handled 5.05 million passengers in 2014-15 and is expected to hit 6.77 million by 2024-2025.
Once fully operational, Dholera airport is poised to serve not just the Dholera Special Investment Region, but also surrounding urban centres like Vadodara, Anand, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, and Nadiad.
The state government now looks forward to in-principle approvals from the Civil Aviation Ministry by January, marking another key milestone for the project.
